Last month, I was named to the U.S. Women’s Bobsled National Team, which is definitely a privilege and an honor. While I’m excited about it, I know that, “To whom much is given much is required.” Although I have made the national team, my spot on the U.S. Olympic team is not guaranteed; and there is still a lot of work for me to do if I want to make it to Sochi in 2014. For example, the duty and obligation to train, eat well and compete on an ambitious tour schedule that kicks off this week.
After team trials we had about 3 weeks to reboot and get some quality training done. While the 3 drivers headed to Sochi to train on the Olympic track, the brake women were afforded an opportunity to stay back and train on their own. You’re probably wondering how the drivers went to Sochi without the National Team brake women. Well the amazing brake women who didn’t qualify for the National Team graciously volunteered to travel to Sochi so that we could regroup and avoid the wear and tear on our bodies from the daily sliding, travel and jet-lag. So, today I say thank you and dedicate this post to the “B” team; B stands for Benevolent, Brave, Bold, and Bad Ass-and I love you all for it!
I thank you profusely for your support and encouragement. I continue to delight in the bobsled training and competition process because you constantly reinforce the concept that patience is a virtue. It takes great character to wait your turn, yet work hard in the meantime. You are truly an inspiration and I appreciate each of you.
I have learned yet another lesson from you ladies about the spirit of sport on this new journey: To sacrifice yourself on behalf of others shows that Team USA is bigger than just those who will perform on the national stage. It is about those behind the scenes, those yelling at the TV and cheering us on worldwide, those benevolent, brave, bold, and bad ass supporters that are you. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
